TELEX Airman 850 Headset

by HighFlyer

The Telex Airman 850 Aviation Headset provides up to 12 decibels (dB) of noise attenuation between 100 to 2000 Hz using the latest in ANR circuitry, targeting and reducing wind noise in jet cockpits. Weighing only four ounces, the Airman 850 headset is the lightest of its kind in the market today. Its ear cups and cushions have been enlarged from previous models to enhance comfort, without sacrificing quality and clarity. Aside from that, additional features such as a “set and forget” volume control feature are also infused in the Airman 850; a noise-cancelling electric microphone and a fully flexible boom. The Airman 850 has dramatically improved the clarity of communication without any need for batteries or panel power, because its active noise reduction is powered by microphone bias.

Telex Communications is well-known as an innovative leader in commercial aviation headsets. It expanded on the design of the world’s most popular lightweight aviation headset and has added a great contribution in the field. Its Airman 850 takes comfort, clarity and convenience to the next level.

Telex Airman 850 aviation headsets are used in more than 70 percent of commercial airframes. The Airman 850 is available for Boeing, Airbus and other airframes without requiring any specialized intercom adapters.

This article doesn’t mention that the Telex 850 has no passive noise protection and the manufacturer makes no claims that it does. Based on all the ANR research I have done, the ANR benefit reduces significantly at 250 hz and ceases at 500 HZ, right where speech begins as does the most damaging noise. Then, when you add the necessary audio (15-18 dB according to the World Health Organization) for ATC communications, the sound level at the ear canal can still exceed OSHA limitations. High quality passive noise protection is still necessary in jet aircraft, especially the Boeing 737 and 727 because of the windshield design (designed in 1958 for the 707) that produces higher cockpit ambient noise levels by about 8-10 dB than other modern jet transports.
